What is a snag? A critical component of a forest, “snag” or “ghost” refers to a dead and decaying tree. Oftentimes older, the tree bark has partially fallen, and the sun has “bleached” the wood a silvery-grey color. Some limbs may be broken and have dropped to the forest floor. Termites chew, and woodpeckers follow, boring holes. Make it home! Bird’s nests ensue. Mosses and ferns grow at the base. Lichens and shelf mushrooms erupt from the surface. Eventually, some snags appear no more than as a giant stick in the air, though we prefer more details in our handmade models. Snags create interest and set the scene.
