Supplies for TreeMaking Since 2011

Special Notice: I am on a short hiatus from making trees.

The doc says I need to let my shoulder heal up. Three weeks. I might start in on trees again in two weeks. I plan to finish up the existing orders which will ship Monday 2/29. I will then focus on getting more kits and other such items into inventory. I know I'm out of variable heights tree kits and other items are out or in short supply.

Most of the the Ready-Made trees won't be purchasable during this time. I do have a couple boxes worth of the new Speedy Trees in stock, some snag trees, and some other trees, Craftsman and Premium. If you really need something, send me an email to coastmans@gmail.com and I will go check to make sure I have it.

Of course, I will be making trees again soon! I plan to start again about 3/12. I am very excited about the new Green Branches material and I have been having a hoot of a time making trees with this stuff.  It will be great to be able to make trees again, without the wince! :) -R

"Maximum" detail means a generous quantity of dead branches. Some branches support "living" foliage.

Man versus Machine!
Lathe Milled vs Hand Carved Trunks

Each features a custom shaped one of a kind trunk which may be hand-carved and/or lathe-milled from Port Orford Cedar.

Lathe-milling yields a totally straight and perfectly round trunk, which is appropriate for modeling tall, straight trees.  The base will not be flared.

Hand carving  results in more irregularities, and is the means by which we can make flared trunk bases, similar to how a cedar tree trunk base appears.

In either case, every possible method of detailing is employed. They even have modeled fire damage to the lower part of the trunk, frequently seen on real old growth trees.

A little video to help you evaluate the Maximum Trees:

Picture
Some of the dead branches in this 18" Maximum Detailed tree actually support the green foliage on the lower part of the tree (Medium Detail Trees don't have this feature).
Picture
Vanna the Preiser Moose is HO scale. You can also see the lower dead branches are supporting green foliage (just like real trees!)

We also offer large trees with a MEDIUM level of detail...

Less dead branches, a little narrower profile, but they can save you $$!

Trunks may have curvatures after sustaining the coloring process, but cannot be guaranteed.
Are you working in a larger scale like O, F, or G scale? Or do you just want some
HO trunks that are fully prototypical "Old Growth"? Coastmans has them...
In Stock! We have them ranging from 16 inches to 24 inches in length, and
currently up to nearly a one-inch diameter base (about 15/16").  They are
tapered to a fine tip and have heavy inscribed bark detail. They come with a
large finish nail (with the head cut off) and a hole is drilled into the base to fit the nail.

Each Trunk is crafted on a large lathe fitted with a router on a guide for the
tapering. Then they are further refined on the tapering/sanding machine.  Then,
bark detail is added via our "Bob Barker", and also by hand. Colored trunks are
treated with a unique blend of clothing dyes and baked at 250F for 6 hours.

Thanks to new tapering gear and an adjustment to the lathe, we can make trunks
of any diameter up to one inch. Very Kewl!

I also make HAND-CARVED large trunks. These are the best trunks I have.
However they do take time, so the cost is higher on these than on the lathe made trunks.
Also they are not perfectly round. They are
wider at the base (think cedar trees) and
have more variation along the length. They have variations in them that are not possible
on the purely lathe-turned trunks. Contact me with questions or pricing inquiries using
the form below.
